Hey, it’s Sofia! This heart granny square pattern is one of my favorite twists on the classic granny square โ€” instead of the usual plain center, you work a small puffed heart first, then square it off with standard granny rounds in white and green. It’s a fast make, perfect for a single coaster, a blanket square you can multiply, or a small applique to sew onto a bag.

New to any of these? Our crochet basics reference guide and magic ring guide cover chains, stitches, and ring starts with photos, and the Craft Yarn Council’s stitch guide is a solid official reference too.

Part 1: The Heart Center (Green)

The heart is built as two small puffed lobes that meet at a shared base, then framed with a round of stitches that squares off the top and bottom into a point.

  1. First lobe: Chain 2. Work 5 double crochet into the 2nd chain from the hook. Fasten off, leaving a short tail.
  2. Second lobe: Repeat step 1 to make a matching second lobe, but do not fasten off.
  3. Join the lobes: With the second lobe still on your hook, chain 2, then slip stitch into the base of the first lobe to join the two halves at the bottom point.
  4. Frame round: Chain 1, then single crochet evenly around the entire outer edge of both lobes together, working 2 sc into the dip between the lobes at the top and 2 sc into the point at the bottom to keep the heart shape crisp. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch.
  5. Fasten off and weave in the lobe tails.

Part 2: Squaring the Heart (White)

This round turns the heart’s rounded outline into the beginning of a square, and sets up the corner spaces you’ll need for the standard granny rounds that follow.

  1. Join white yarn with a slip stitch in a stitch roughly at the heart’s left-side midpoint (this will become one side of your square).
  2. Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), then work 2 more double crochet into the same stitch.
  3. Skip 1-2 stitches evenly around the heart, working (3 dc, chain 1) groups into evenly spaced points, and a (3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc) corner group at each of the four “corners” you want to establish โ€” roughly at the top-left dip, top-right dip, and the two sides partway down.
  4. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain-3. Fasten off.

Don’t worry if this round looks a little uneven the first time โ€” the heart’s curves mean your stitch spacing won’t be perfectly mathematical like a standard granny round, and that’s normal. The next round pulls everything into a clean square.

Part 3: Standard Granny Rounds (Green)

From here it’s just a standard granny square, worked the same way you’d continue any granny square project.

  1. Join green yarn in any corner chain-2 space.
  2. Chain 3 (first dc), 2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc into the same corner space (this completes one corner).
  3. Chain 1, work a (3 dc, chain 1) group into each side space around, and a (3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc) group into each of the remaining 3 corners.
  4. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain-3.
  5. Round 2: Repeat the same corner and side pattern once more, adding one more (3 dc, chain 1) group along each side to keep the square growing evenly. Fasten off.

Finishing

  • Weave in all remaining ends with your yarn needle.
  • Block lightly if the edges look uneven โ€” pin the square to shape on a blocking mat, spritz with water, and let it dry flat.
  • Optional: sew a small loop onto one corner if you want to use it as a keychain or ornament, matching the loop-and-twine look in the photo.

More Granny Square Questions

How do you crochet a granny square step by step with pictures? Start with a magic ring or chain-4 ring, work your first round of (3 dc, chain 2) groups into 4 corners, join, then repeat adding one more 3-dc group per side each round โ€” the same core method used for the squaring and standard rounds in this heart version.

Can a granny square pattern be made as a flower or heart instead of a plain circle? Yes โ€” swapping the center round for a different shape (like the two-lobe heart used here, or a 5-6 petal flower round) is a common variation. The outer squaring and granny rounds work the same way regardless of what’s in the center.

Is this granny square pattern good for beginners? Yes, as long as you’re comfortable with chains, double crochet, and joining rounds with a slip stitch. The heart center is the only new technique โ€” the rest is standard granny square construction.

Can I get a PDF version of this granny square pattern? Right now this guide is published here on the blog with step photos; a printable PDF may be added in the future.

And there you have it โ€” a quick heart granny square you can make as a one-off coaster or multiply into a full blanket. If you enjoyed this one, our filet crochet graphs guide is another good next read if you want to learn a new charting technique.
