Crochet Calculators

A crochet calculator takes the guesswork out of planning a project. Instead of estimating how much yarn to buy or how long a blanket will take, enter your gauge swatch or pattern numbers below and get a real answer. All seven tools are free, run right in your browser, and don’t ask you to sign up for anything.

How should I use these results?

These are planning estimates, not pattern instructions. Check stitch repeats, turning chains, shaping, and your actual gauge. Yarn estimates assume the same yarn throughout; exclude buttons, lining, and other non-yarn weight. Pricing methods show different cost bases, not guaranteed selling prices. Selling fees, tax, shipping, and profit are only included if you add them.

What each crochet calculator does

Stitches & rows calculator

This is a gauge calculator: it turns your swatch’s stitch or row count into the number you actually need for a different length. Measure a swatch, tell it how long you want the finished piece, and it scales the math for you — no more guessing whether 18 rows of double crochet will make a 10-inch square. New to hook sizes and abbreviations? Start with our crochet basics reference guide.

Project time calculator

Time yourself on a few rows, enter your pace and the total row count, and this estimates how many hours a project will realistically take. Useful for deciding if a pattern fits a weekend, or for quoting a fair price if you’re making something to sell.

Skeins & yarn cost calculator

The most common crochet math problem: “how many skeins do I actually need to buy?” Enter the yardage your pattern calls for and the length per skein, and this rounds up to a whole number of skeins (plus the total cost), so you don’t run short mid-project or over-buy “just in case.”

Yarn used by weight calculator

Already finished a project and want to know how much yarn went into it? Weigh the finished piece, compare it to your skein’s label weight and length — check the Craft Yarn Council’s standard yarn weight system if your label doesn’t list yardage — and this backs into the actual yardage used, handy for costing out a pattern you’re about to write up.

Materials + time pricing calculator

A full cost basis for something you’re selling: materials, plus your hours at an hourly rate, plus any fixed extras like packaging. This is the most complete of the three pricing tools, since it accounts for both yarn and labor together.

Materials-only pricing calculator

For a quick materials-based price: skeins used × price per skein × a multiplier you choose, plus extras. The multiplier defaults to 1 (yarn cost only) — it’s not a profit-margin percentage, so adjust it to whatever markup makes sense for you.

Time-only pricing calculator

Just the labor side: hours worked × your hourly rate, plus fixed extras. Pair this with the materials-only calculator above if you’d rather price yarn and time separately instead of using the combined calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a crochet calculator?

As accurate as the numbers you put in. These tools do the arithmetic correctly every time, but they rely on your own gauge swatch, your pace, and your yarn’s actual yardage — not the numbers printed on a ball band for a different dye lot. Always swatch first.

Do these calculators account for stitch repeats or turning chains?

No — the stitches & rows result is the raw scaled count. If your pattern has a multi-stitch repeat, round up to the nearest full repeat yourself, and add your pattern’s turning chain separately.

Why does the skein calculator round up instead of giving an exact number?

Because you can only buy whole skeins. The calculator shows both numbers — the exact amount needed and the whole skeins to purchase — so you can see exactly how much buffer you’re getting.

Which pricing calculator should I use to sell my crochet?

Start with materials + time — it’s the most complete cost basis. The materials-only and time-only tools are there if you price those two parts separately or want to see each number on its own before combining them.

Is this crochet calculator free to use?

Yes. All seven tools are free, with no sign-up and nothing stored — your numbers stay in your browser and reset when you leave the page.
